Inverter Based Resources (IBR) integration studies

Objectives

The objective of these workshops is to familiarize attendees with EMT simulations of IBRs and grid integration analysis.
EMTP® is used for all simulations and illustration examples. Practical test cases are provided to illustrate the various concepts.

Training structure

This training is divided in 2 workshops. The two workshops are independent, even though it is recommended to participate in both of them.
The complete training duration is 2 days.
It starts at 8:30 am and ends at 12:00 pm on both days.
Breakfast will be available.

Intended audience

This course is intended for engineers, researchers, operators and maintenance personnel. It provides an up-to-date technical expertise on renewable energy integration projects.

Computer and temporary EMTP® license

Each participant will have to bring a personal computer. EMTP® temporary licenses will be provided for the duration of the course.

Program

Day 1:

Workshop 1 focuses on traditional EMT analysis applied to IBR. The content is:

  • IBR modeling
  • Transformer energization
  • Fault analysis
  • Temporary overvoltage
  • Harmonic analysis

Day 2:

Workshop 2 focuses on IBR integration into a bulk power system. The content is:

  • Description of WECC EMT models
  • Grid forming converters
  • Load-flow and steady-state
  • Stability analysis
  • Sub-synchronous Control Interaction (SSCI)
